My sister kissed my husband in front of thirty people at her own anniversary party and called it a joke. Her husband had a wrapped present in his hands and an envelope she had never opened.

“You know what I’ve never got over? You were so quick. In the kitchen. You had the coat and the taxi and the line about it being a joke sorted before I’d got down the hallway.”

“You weren’t covering for her that night. You’d done it before.”

And I had. Twice. In 2013 and in 2014, at two different parties, when Romy was twenty-one and twenty-two, and I had filed both of them under she’s young.

Where everybody ended up.

Tobin and Romy divorced in the March of 2026. He kept Harrow Rise. Gethin moved out of the annexe in the July of 2025 and it is rented to a couple now.

Tobin is thirty-seven. He sold his half of the business, as I said, at a discount, and he does something in Ferrinby that he says is boring and that he is clearly much happier in.

He comes here for a roast about once every six weeks. He and Ellis are not friends and are perfectly civil, and I watched the pair of them put a trampoline together in the August, in near silence, for three hours, and that is where we are.
