Then the bottom-left drawer caught.
It had always caught.
I usually lifted slightly and pulled.
This time, I removed it.
Behind the drawer was wood.
Except one panel looked newer.
My pulse increased.
I pressed it.
Nothing.
Then I noticed a tiny brass screw.
I fetched a screwdriver.
The panel loosened.
Behind it was a narrow compartment.
Inside lay a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
SYLVIE.
Grandma’s handwriting.
My knees nearly gave way.
I sat on the floor.
The envelope had been waiting less than three feet from me for nearly three years.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My dearest Sylvie,
If you found this because Evelyn started asking questions, then I waited long enough.
I stopped.
Read the sentence again.
My skin went cold.
The letter continued.
There are things about our family that I should have told you sooner.
I did not because I wanted you to build a life before inheritance had the chance to distort it.
Your mother believes I died leaving very little.
That is not true.
My heartbeat pounded in my ears.
What I possessed was never the most important part.
The important part was what I controlled.
Below that line was a name.
O.P.
HOLDINGS TRUST.
I had never heard of it.
Then came another.
Mercer-Prescott Industrial Partnership.
And another.
Wexford Lane Group — Founding Class B Shares.
I stopped breathing.
Wexford Lane.
The same Wexford Lane that had just hired me.
I read the line again.
It could not mean what I thought.
Grandma wrote:
In 1988, I invested in a small infrastructure company founded by Jonathan Wexford and Elias Lane.
I invested again in 1991 when the company nearly collapsed.
In exchange, I received a block of founder shares and conversion rights.
My hands began shaking.
Those shares were placed in trust.
Your father knows the trust exists.
He does not know its present value.
I stood up so quickly that the letter fell.
“No.”
I said it out loud.
“No, no, no.”
I grabbed my laptop.
Searched.
Old corporate histories.
Founding investors.
Most names were hidden behind entities.
