“Because Mrs.
Prescott anticipated you’d ask.
Her instruction was explicit.
No trust representative was permitted to recommend you for employment, education, awards, fellowships, or professional advancement.”
Something loosened inside my chest.
“Then how did Wexford know to notify you?”
“Your name triggered a compliance match after you accepted a position.”
“So they didn’t know during recruitment?”
“Not the recruiting team.”
I exhaled.
For some reason, that mattered more than the money.
My work was mine.
The nine million was mine.
I had not been chosen because of inheritance.
I had been chosen before anyone knew.
Nathaniel opened another folder.
“Now we need to discuss your parents.”
My stomach tightened again.
“What about them?”
“Your grandmother changed the trust fourteen months before her death.”
“Why?”
“Because she discovered your father had attempted to obtain a loan against assets he did not own.”
I stared.
“What?”
“He approached a lender claiming he would eventually control the trust.”
