I’m 22 and I fell in love with my own patient

And the last thing.

The ring is in that tin and the tin was in the box Mr Haldane gave me, with the letter.

It has gone to almost nothing. It is a dark ring of something stuck to the bottom and you would not know what it had been.

And underneath it there is a slip of paper with a date on it.

***19 April.***

The day she said yes.

She dated it. On the day, before any of the rest of it, she put that sweet in a tin and wrote the date on a piece of paper.

And three days later I went into a break room at two in the morning and told a nineteen-year-old.

And the thing I keep arriving at — and I have been eleven months getting here — is that I did not do it to boast.

I did it because until the nineteenth of April, nothing that had ever happened to me had been real unless somebody else had heard about it.
