I received a 25-year prison sentence for a crime I didn’t commit. My husband stood beside his pregnant mistress while my mother-in-law pretended to cry. I calmly revealed one secret. The officers froze, and the prosecutor shouted, “Stop the transfer!”

My eyes filled with tears.

Then the door opened.

Martha Jenkins, our longtime cleaning supervisor, stood in the doorway.

Her left arm was in a cast.

In her other hand, she carried a cup of coffee in my father’s silver holder.

“Miss Eleanor?”

Her voice trembled.

I turned.

“Martha.”

She began crying.

“Oh, thank goodness. You’re really here.”

I hurried toward her.

“What happened to your arm?”

Harrison answered quietly.

“When Silas tried to dispose of your father’s antique coffee service, Martha intervened. One of his security employees injured her.”

I looked at her in disbelief.

“Martha, why would you risk getting hurt over a coffee set?”

She wiped her eyes.

“Because your father loved it. And I couldn’t bear watching them throw away everything that reminded us of him.”

I gently held her hand.

“You’ve done more for this family than you know.”

She shook her head.
