I received a 25-year prison sentence for a crime I didn’t commit. My husband stood beside his pregnant mistress while my mother-in-law pretended to cry. I calmly revealed one secret. The officers froze, and the prosecutor shouted, “Stop the transfer!”

Then his smile widened.

“Well, at least you finally understand.”

The visit should have ended there.

But Silas wasn’t satisfied.

He’d spent months planning my downfall, and now he wanted to enjoy watching me suffer.

He leaned closer to the glass.

“Would you like to hear a little secret before you leave?”

I looked at him.

“Go ahead.”

“Do you remember Clara?”

His first wife.

The woman he’d always claimed had abandoned him.

“What about her?”

Silas smiled strangely.

“She wasn’t the innocent woman people thought she was.”

I remained silent.

“Five years ago, she discovered some private financial records from my old business. She threatened to expose them.”

“What happened?”

“We argued.”

He paused.

“At my family’s farm in Kentucky.”

A cold feeling settled in my stomach.

“Go on.”

Silas glanced toward Beatrice.

His mother was smiling as though she already knew the ending.
