I received a 25-year prison sentence for a crime I didn’t commit. My husband stood beside his pregnant mistress while my mother-in-law pretended to cry. I calmly revealed one secret. The officers froze, and the prosecutor shouted, “Stop the transfer!”

When the judge returned with the verdict, I felt the entire courtroom holding its breath.

“Eleanor Vance, this court finds you guilty of first-degree murder.”

My chest tightened.

“The sentence is twenty-five years to life.”

Beatrice shouted from the gallery.

“Finally! Justice!”

Court officers quickly escorted her outside.

Harrison gripped my hand.

“We’ll appeal. We have grounds to challenge this.”

But as I looked across the courtroom, I noticed Silas watching me anxiously.

For the first time, I understood his greatest fear.

An extended investigation could uncover the money trail.

He wanted the case closed.

He wanted me sent away.

He wanted the freedom to finish taking everything.

When the judge asked whether I intended to pursue an appeal, I answered carefully.

“I understand the sentence. At this stage, I won’t pursue an appeal.”

Harrison turned toward me in disbelief.

“Eleanor!”

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Silas slowly relaxed.
