I Married the Boy Who Treated Me Poorly Throughout High School – At Our Wedding, He Broke Down and Said, ‘You Deserved to Know Why I Really Married You’

“I love you because you’re smart and stubborn, and you steal the blankets, and you pretend you hate reality TV even though you know everyone’s names.”

I started crying.

I said yes!

I started crying.

When we told Mom, she hugged him longer than I expected.

Then she whispered something in his ear.

Ben’s face changed.

“What was that?” I asked.

Mom smiled.

“Nothing.”

They were both terrible liars.

Ben’s face changed.

Our wedding was small, with about 40 people.

Natalie was my maid of honor. Ben’s cousin Mark was his best man.

Mom wore green and cried through the ceremony.

Everything felt easy.

Then, during dinner, I saw Mom talking to Ben near the back of the room.

Mark was his best man.

Ben

looked down, then at me.

Mom touched his arm. My new husband shook his head and walked out. I followed him.

That’s how we ended up in the hallway.

Now I stood there, waiting.

“Start talking.”

Ben took out an envelope and opened it.

Inside was an old letter.

Mom touched his arm.

He handed it to me. I recognized his mother’s name.

Carol.

“What is this?”

Ben wiped his face.

“I found it after Dad died.”

I looked down at the letter.

My mother’s name appeared near the middle.

My husband took a breath.

“When I was 15, Dad lost his job.”

“I found it.”

“My parents got behind on the mortgage. I didn’t know how bad it was. Mom worked part-time in the school office.”

I remembered that vaguely. It was before I left.

“One afternoon, your mom came in after you transferred. She was finishing the paperwork.

She heard my mom crying.”

“What happened?”

“Your mom helped. She knew someone who ran a local assistance fund. She helped my parents apply.”

He swallowed.

I remembered that vaguely.

“The fund didn’t cover everything.”

I already knew where that was going.

“What did my mom do?”

“She anonymously paid the rest. Three mortgage payments.”

I stared at him.

Ben pointed to the letter.

“My mom wrote down your mother’s name because she wanted me to know someday.”
