I married my high school sweetheart at 73 — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “You walked right into his TRAP.

Not idly. I spent an evening on it.

And I found that he was still there and that he had never married and that his father’s business had gone in about 2009, and I found a photograph of him from a thing at a club in 2019.

And four weeks later I started looking at places at Barrowmere.

And eleven weeks after that I moved.

And the eleven months between moving back and the eleventh of February, which I have never had to account for.

March 2024 to February 2025.

And I knew where he lived. Carrow Hill is four streets from where I took a flat, which was not a coincidence either.

And I walked past that house. I have worked out, roughly, how often, and it is about once a fortnight.

Twenty-odd times in eleven months.

And I never knocked.

And I have told myself it was pride, and that it was fifty-five years, and that you cannot knock on a door after that.
