I married my high school sweetheart at 73 — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “You walked right into his TRAP.

And my pension would not run to it, so I took a job as a nurse at the hospital.

And then one day I went into a patient’s room to see to him.

And I opened that chart and saw the name Alun. And I looked at him and I knew him.

He was thin and he was terribly weak and it was him. And he had cancer and it had gone a long way.

And he looked at me and he smiled straight away and said hello.

As though something had decided to put the two of us in a room one more time.

And we talked every day. And you know the feeling when somebody is simply the person — that is what it was like.

And then one day he said, quietly:

“Love, I haven’t got long, so it’s time I told you something. I have loved you my whole life. I never married anybody, because the only person I ever wanted to marry was you. Will you marry me? It’s the last thing I’ll ask for.”
