I cried in my husband’s arms at the airport as he boarded what he claimed was a two-year work assignment in Zurich.

I smiled softly and typed back: Give her my love.

I picked up my cup of steaming black coffee and walked out onto the balcony. The city below was alive, chaotic, and beautiful.

For five years, I had lived in a shadow, believing I was loved by a man who didn’t exist. But standing high above the world, feeling the warm sun on my face, I realized something important.

He hadn’t broken me.

He had only revealed who I truly was.

I took a slow sip of coffee, looked out at the horizon, and finally breathed.
