I cleaned her house for eight years, then before moving she asked me to come back without my cleaning supplies

His eyes opened. Just a little. They were troubled and confused. His lips moved.

“Carly”, she whispered. “It’s Thursday.”

“Yes. Yes, it’s Thursday. I’m here. I got you.”

“I was waiting”, she said. “I knew you would come on Thursday.”

I called 911 with my hands so shaking that I dropped the phone twice. I took a towel from the rack, one of the plain gray towels, the ones for her, and folded it under her head. I took the blanket from his bed and covered him with it. His hands were frozen. I held them between mine, rubbed them and talked to her all the time, about anything, about the weather, about Willa, about the bird’s nest in the attic window, just to keep her eyes open open.
