I carried my twin brother’s baby as a surrogate, but when he met his newborn daughter at the hospital, he refused to take her home

I gave him an ultimatum: either he came clean to Melissa right then and there, or I would go over and tell her everything myself.

And so we went. I carried little Hope up the walkway while Ryan opened the door looking like he was about to vomit. Melissa sat on the couch, her eyes moving instantly from the baby to her husband. Trembling, Ryan finally confessed to the terrible truth: the fake job, the coffee shop routine, the secret mountain of debt, and how he had used his daughter’s health scare to cover up his own cowardice.

Melissa sat in complete silence for what seemed like an eternity. And then when she finally did speak, her voice was quivering from rage unlike anything I’d ever heard. She told him she would have sold off all the furniture in the nursery, would have worked two jobs, but there was no way, not once in her entire life, would she have sacrificed their baby for money. But then I jumped in and brought up what Dr. Patel had told us; it was a mild condition, fully treatable with early surgery, and their little Hope had every chance to live a healthy life.

Gently, she raised her arms, and I placed their baby right where she belonged. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks as she held their daughter. She told him she could forgive him for panicking in the heat of the moment, but she would never be able to forgive him for excluding her and hiding things behind his pride. He promised her it would never happen again.

It’s been one hell of a rough ride since then. They’re handling the financial difficulties, medical issues related to Hope, and a lot of rebuilding their trust, which will take more than one talk to fix. But seeing how they finally faced everything together without any fake suits, secret credit cards, and endless lies makes me believe that perhaps they can still make it through.
