“No.”
“Did I tell your staff how to classify them?”
“No.”
“Did I book those rooms?”
“No.”
“Did I pay Tessa’s rent?”
“No.”
“Then don’t ask me to carry that.”
Owen shifted in her arms.
Corinne adjusted the blanket instinctively.
“I want to come home,” I said.
At the empty nursery.
“This isn’t my home anymore.”
The call ended seven minutes later.
But those six words stayed in the room after she was gone.
Chapter 4: What she knew
Three days later, Corinne agreed to meet me.
Not at our house.
Not alone.
Elena arranged a private room at her office.
When I walked in, Corinne was already seated beside the window.
She wore dark trousers and a cream sweater.
No makeup.
No wedding ring.
My eyes went immediately to her left hand.
“Where’s Owen?”
“With my sister.”
There were documents on the table between us.
Briefly, neither of us spoke.
