Brutal, but fair.
Tessa had not forced me to falsify a dinner purpose.
She hadn’t entered reimbursements.
She hadn’t ignored my wife’s calls.
I did those things.
“What did you think was going to happen?” I asked.
“With us?”
“Yes.”
“I thought eventually you’d make a decision.”
“What decision?”
“You know.”
“Leave Corinne?”
“Maybe.”
“And marry you?”
“I never said marry.”
For almost a year, I had enjoyed believing two women wanted the same future with me.
Corinne wanted a husband.
Tessa wanted access to a version of mine.
And I wanted both women to keep accepting half of me.
“What did you think I was promising you?” I asked.
Tessa’s eyes filled, but her voice remained sharp.
“You promised me this wasn’t temporary.”
“I said a lot of things.”
“Yes, you did.”
“So did you.”
“I never told you I was leaving someone.”
