I just had a baby.” “June is almost a year old.” “I’m working on it. I’ve been running. I’ve been—” “It’s not just that,” he said. “It’s everything. You don’t take care of yourself. You don’t wear makeup anymore. You wear sweatpants every weekend. You don’t even try.” I sat there with my hands in my lap. “I’m tired, Max. I’m so tired.” “Everybody’s tired,” he said. “Other women manage.” Other women. I should have heard it then. I didn’t. Three weeks later, I found out. I’m not proud of how. I looked at his phone. He’d left it on the counter while he was in the shower. It lit up with a text. Can’t stop thinking about this morning. The name said Claire Trainer. I picked up the phone. My hands were shaking. I opened the messages. They went back four months. I’m not going to tell you what was in them. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to forget. But there were pictures. And there were things he said to her about me. Things like, “She’s let herself go so bad.” Things like, “You’re everything she isn’t.” When he came out of the shower, I was sitting on the bed holding his phone. He saw my face. He saw the phone. He didn’t even look surprised. He didn’t apologize. He just shrugged. “Well, what did you expect?” he said, toweling off his hair. “Men are visual. And Claire — she’s perfect. You just don’t look the way you used to anymore. You used to have a slim waist.” He looked at me. Really looked. Up and down. “When was the last time you even looked at yourself in the mirror?” he said. He moved out that weekend. While he was packing, he kept talking. Like he was explaining something to a child. “You did this, Hannah. You know that, right? I loved you. I really did. But you stopped trying. You should’ve taken better care of yourself. Any man would have done the same thing.” ← Previous Page Next Page →
Uncategorized Came home for the holidays, but my mom opened the door and said, “You weren’t invited — this is for family only.” I turned around without a word; minutes later, my sister texted, “Don’t take it personally — you know how you are.” I smiled, froze the joint account, canceled the utility payments, and cut off every card; by morning, my voicemail was full — and the group chat was on fire.
