I arrived at the port with our baby twins to surprise my husband, who was returning from months at sea, but I caught him with his mistress — so I made him regret it.

No enormous bank account.

No wealthy stranger arriving to solve everything.

Just three morning shifts, a temporary bedroom, and a friend who refused to let me face everything alone.

One evening, after I’d finished washing the babies’ bottles, Dana knocked gently on the bedroom door.

“Come eat before your dinner gets cold.”

I followed her to the kitchen.

Two plates of pasta waited on the table.

She pulled out a chair for me.

For the first time in months, someone had prepared a meal without expecting me to earn it through silence or obedience.

I looked at my friend, then toward the room where my daughters slept.

I still didn’t know what our lives would look like six weeks from now.

But I knew one thing.

I hadn’t destroyed my family by telling the truth.

I’d finally stopped allowing someone else’s lies to determine my future.
