“Can they?”
“Yeah. Hopefully they work through it.”
I almost laughed.
“Hopefully everyone gets what they deserve.”
Silence.
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing. See you tonight.”
I hung up.
Now I knew Mark intended to keep lying until he couldn’t anymore.
Daniel wanted to confront Jenna that night, but I asked him to wait until we’d both spoken with our attorneys.
Instead, we planned Sunday dinner.
Daniel texted Jenna.
Can we have dinner at Mom and Dad’s Sunday? Mom’s making roast.
She replied, “Of course 🩷”
I hated that heart.
Sunday dinners had been a family tradition for years.
That week, everything changed.
Still, I prepared the usual meal.
Roast. Potatoes. Green beans.
At 5:40, Daniel arrived alone.
He stood beside me in the kitchen.
“You ready?”
“No.”
“Me neither.”
Jenna arrived at six.
She kissed my cheek.
“Hi, Carol.”
Mark came downstairs a few minutes later.
He looked at Daniel, then Jenna, then me.
