I didn’t post anything online or contact everyone we knew.
But I stopped protecting their secret.
When people asked why the marriage had ended, I simply said:
“Mark had an affair with Daniel’s wife.”
The truth was damaging enough.
Months later, Mark asked to meet for coffee.
I nearly refused, but eventually agreed.
He looked older.
I probably did too.
He told me he’d started therapy.
Then he said, “The affair is over.”
I looked at him.
“What happened?”
He stared into his coffee.
“Turns out guilt and secrecy were most of what we had in common.”
I said nothing.
Then he whispered, “I destroyed everything.”
“You damaged a lot.”
“I want my son back.”
“That’s between you and Daniel.”
“Can you talk to him?”
“No.”
“Carol.”
“For 31 years, I cleaned up uncomfortable things because I wanted this family intact. I’m not doing it anymore.”
