That tiny gesture told me everything.
I turned to Mark.
“My attorney will contact yours.”
His face drained of color.
“Carol.”
“I’m filing for divorce.”
“After thirty-one years, you’re just done?”
I stared at him.
“That’s an interesting way to describe what happened.”
“We can go to counseling.”
“You should.”
“I mean us.”
“No.”
He looked stunned.
Mark seemed to believe thirty-one years together guaranteed forgiveness, as though our history protected him from consequences.
Daniel stood.
He removed his wedding ring and placed it on the table.
Jenna stared at it.
“I love you.”
He swallowed.
“I believe you think you do.”
“Please don’t leave.”
“You left first. You just kept sleeping next to me.”
Then he turned toward Mark.
“I hope she was worth losing me.”
Mark’s expression collapsed.
Daniel walked out.
Jenna followed him into the driveway, crying.
I remained at the table with Mark.
