He slept with a 60-year-old woman to save his dying mother. What he discovers later changes him…1

The Young Man Who Had Nothing to Offer

Raúl lived in a modest working-class neighborhood in Bamako, where the streets were crowded, the houses stood close together, and neighbors knew one another’s problems almost as well as their own.

He had completed his studies two years earlier, hoping to find a stable job and give his family a better life. Instead, he had spent months submitting applications, visiting offices, and waiting for phone calls that never came.

Eventually, he accepted that his diploma alone would not put food on the table.

He learned plumbing and began taking whatever jobs he could find. Sometimes he repaired leaking pipes. Sometimes he unclogged drains or replaced broken taps. On good days, he earned enough to buy groceries. On bad days, he returned home with empty pockets and an apology for his mother.
