“Because you told me the truth when you had every reason not to. Because you refused something that would have been easy to accept. And because you looked at me without treating me like a prize.”
She paused.
“I wanted to know whether that honesty was real.”
Raúl looked down at his hands.
“I have to be honest about something too. I was tempted by your offer.”
Raquel’s expression changed slightly.
“My mother is ill. My sisters depend on me. When you mentioned money, I thought about the hospital before I thought about anything else. I won’t pretend that your offer didn’t affect me.”
“Thank you for telling me.”
“But I didn’t want to accept something that would make me feel as if I had sold the right to make my own decisions.”
Raquel studied him with new respect.
“Do you think that’s what I wanted?”
