Raúl looked toward the hospital entrance, where he was waiting for news about his mother.
“I appreciate that, but I have too much going on right now.”
Raquel’s voice softened.
“Is your mother still ill?”
He stiffened.
“How do you know about my mother?”
“You mentioned her yesterday.”
“Then please understand why I can’t do this.”
He ended the call politely.
When Esteban heard what had happened, he nearly lost his temper.
“You refused her again?”
“She’s a stranger, Esteban.”
“She is a stranger who could pay your mother’s hospital bills in one afternoon!”
“That’s exactly what worries me.”
Esteban stared at him.
“What worries you? That she has money?”
“That I might start making decisions because I need something from her. I don’t want to become a man who pretends to love someone just because she can save me.”
