Ruby immediately leaned against me.
Caleb sat on my other side.
For a little while, none of us said anything.
Then Ruby looked up.
“Are you mad at us, Aunt Micah?”
My heart sank.
“Of course not, sweetheart.”
“Mommy said you don’t want to pick us up anymore.”
I gently brushed a loose strand of hair from her face.
“That’s grown-up stuff, honey. You haven’t done anything wrong.”
We waited together.
One hour and twenty-six minutes after dismissal, Nicole finally arrived.
She entered the building carrying a thick manila folder.
Her expression was cold.
“Come on,” she told the children. “Your aunt has more important things to do.”
I remained seated.
As she led them away, Gloria recorded the pickup time in the school’s log.
Then she quietly remarked,
“Third late pickup since the school year started.”
Nicole stiffened.
For the first time, I realized that other people were keeping records of what was happening too.
