For 4 years, I picked up my sister’s kids from school for free. One day I was 37 minutes late, and she screamed at me in front of them: “Not with my children!” Then she shoved me out of her house. I stopped picking them up. 11 days later, the school called me. Then my sister called 6 times. I turned my phone face down.

Then she quietly said,

“I’m sorry, Micah. I should have listened to you instead of assuming Nicole was right.”

It didn’t erase years of favoritism.

But it was a beginning.

Dan now has the children every Wednesday.

They’ve turned taco night into their own little tradition.

Sometimes he invites me.

I go when I want to.

I bring dessert.

I laugh with the children.

And when the evening is over, I go home.

Nobody expects me to stay until bedtime.

Nobody hands me a list of unpaid responsibilities.

I visit because I’m wanted, not because I’m required.

And perhaps the biggest change of all happened at work.

In January, Janice called me into her office.

She placed a folder in front of me.

Inside was an offer for the lead event designer position.

The same kind of opportunity I’d turned down four years earlier.
