For 4 years, I picked up my sister’s kids from school for free. One day I was 37 minutes late, and she screamed at me in front of them: “Not with my children!” Then she shoved me out of her house. I stopped picking them up. 11 days later, the school called me. Then my sister called 6 times. I turned my phone face down.

Something rattled beneath her blanket.

It sounded like coins.

Then she whispered,

“How much money do you cost, Aunt Micah?”

I couldn’t speak.

Before I could answer, the blanket was pulled away.

Nicole’s angry face appeared on the screen.

“Stop talking to my daughter!”

The call ended.

I sat staring at my phone.

My sister had already used me as a false expense in court.

Now she was telling her children that my love had been something she purchased.

That night, I made a decision.

If Nicole needed me to support her false story, I wanted her to explain that story in her own words.

A few days later, I called her.

She answered sharply.

“What now?”

I made my voice sound uncertain.

“I’ve been thinking about the hearing. Tell me exactly what I’m supposed to say.”

Her tone changed immediately.

“Oh, thank goodness, Micah. I knew you’d come around.”
