I dialed the number.
She picked up on the second ring. “Kesha?”
“I’m here,” I said softly.
“I didn’t mean to drag you back
into their darkness,” Celeste said, her voice strained over the line. “I left the house an hour ago. I took a room at a hotel in downtown Boulder. But before I packed my bags, I went into Daniel’s old study at Patricia’s—the one he uses when he visits from Denver. I wanted to find my car keys, but…” She drew a sharp breath. “I found a file, Kesha. A physical legal file tucked behind the books.”
“What was in it?”
“It’s an agreement,” Celeste whispered. “Eight years ago, Marcus’s firm was bleeding money after he lost the Denver contract. Daniel was managing the family trust. There was a trust condition left by Marcus’s grandfather—a distribution that was set to hit when Marcus turned thirty, but only if he was either single or in a legally binding, childless marriage that hadn’t resulted in ‘financial liabilities.’”
Cold liquid fire seemed to pour
through my veins.
“If Marcus had a child—or four—the trust was restructured to hold the funds in a minor’s trust until the children turned twenty-one,” Celeste continued. “Daniel was deeply in debt back then. He needed Marcus to get his share of the inheritance clear so Daniel could take a percentage as the family trustee. If Marcus acknowledged your pregnancy, the money locked up instantly.”
The pieces fell into place with a sickening, metallic click.
Patricia hadn’t just hidden an envelope out of maternal possessiveness and fear. Daniel had framed it as a catastrophe to her. He had convinced a panicked, desperate mother that I was trying to trap her son, while secretly ensuring that Marcus’s pride and panic would push him to run—leaving Daniel free to siphon millions from the clear inheritance.
“Marcus didn’t know,” Celeste added quietly. “I watched his face when you walked in today, Kesha. A
man lying to protect himself doesn’t look like that. He was a coward eight years ago, yes. He chose not to look. He chose to run. But he didn’t know his brother erased his children for a check.”
