Easy Classic Vanilla Butter Cake with Buttermilk Sauce (Best Moist Southern Dessert)

My friend’s grandmother passed away a few years ago. But her cake lives on. Every time I make it, I think of her. I think of her kitchen, her hands, her smile. I think of the way she fed people not just food, but love.

That’s what this cake is. It’s love, baked into something you can eat.

Make it for your family. Make it for your neighbors. Make it for yourself on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Pour that buttermilk sauce over the top

and watch it soak in.

Then take a bite.

And close your eyes.

Now I’d love to hear from you. Did you make this Southern Butter Cake? Did you pour the sauce over the top? Eat it warm? Share it with someone you love? Drop a comment below – I read every single one.

And if this recipe earns a spot in your dessert rotation, please share it with a friend who loves classic, comforting sweets. A text, a pin, a shared link. Good recipes — and good memories — are meant to be passed down.

For the Buttermilk Sauce:

    • cup (1 stick / 113g) unsalted butter

    • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

    • ½ cup (120ml) buttermilk

    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    • ¼ teaspoon baking soda (this prevents curdling – don’t skip!)

    Optional (For Serving):

    • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

    • Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)

    • Whipped cream (lightly sweetened)

    Substitutions & Swaps:

    • No buttermilk? Make your own: add 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar to 1 cup milk. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until thickened.

    • No unsalted butter? Use salted butter, but reduce the salt in the recipe to a pinch.

    • Gluten-free: Use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend with xanthan gum (King Arthur, Bob’s Red Mill). Add 2 tablespoons extra buttermilk.

    • Dairy-free: Use vegan butter and unsweetened almond milk + 1 tablespoon lemon juice (as buttermilk substitute). The texture will be slightly different but still delicious.
