At my son’s housewarming party, my daughter-in-law screamed at my wife in front of twenty guests. “GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! YOUR CHEAP GIFT IS DISGUSTING!” My wife burst into tears. My son just laughed.

He lowered his head.

Four months later, Daniel and Vanessa made the difficult decision to sell their home voluntarily.

The property sold for less than they’d hoped.

After paying the primary mortgage, my secured loan, and other associated expenses, very little remained.

Their lavish lifestyle disappeared almost overnight.

Vanessa was furious.

She posted accusations online, claiming I’d deliberately ruined their future.

But Patricia corrected the story.

She explained what had happened at the dinner and confirmed that the guests had chosen to leave after Vanessa’s treatment of Eleanor.

Other relatives supported her account.

Vanessa eventually deleted her posts.

But her marriage was already struggling.

Daniel moved into a modest apartment.

Vanessa refused to live there.

She returned to her parents’ home.

Not long afterward, she filed for divorce.

I didn’t celebrate their separation.

Whatever mistakes they’d made, I knew Daniel was hurting.

But I also knew that protecting him from every consequence would only prevent him from learning.
