At my son’s housewarming party, my daughter-in-law screamed at my wife in front of twenty guests. “GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! YOUR CHEAP GIFT IS DISGUSTING!” My wife burst into tears. My son just laughed.

Two weeks later, Daniel appeared at our doorstep.

He looked exhausted.

“Dad, can we talk?”

I invited him inside.

Vanessa followed him.

The moment she saw Eleanor, she began complaining.

“This entire situation started because your wife couldn’t accept a little criticism!”

I stood immediately.

“Vanessa, you will not speak to Eleanor that way in our home.”

She looked offended.

Daniel finally intervened.

“Vanessa, please. We’re here to discuss the loan.”

For once, she sat down.

My attorney joined us.

Richard placed the signed agreement on the table.

“Daniel, your parents provided $500,000, secured by a second mortgage. The debt remains outstanding.”

Daniel looked down at the paperwork.

“I thought Dad would eventually let it go.”

I felt a deep disappointment.

“Then why did you sign an agreement promising to repay it?”

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Because family members are supposed to help one another!”
