“I was only trying to make you see what kind of woman you’ve married,” she said.
“Why?” Roy’s voice cracked. “Why would you do this?”
Margaret finally stopped pretending.
In a strange way, it was almost a relief.
“Because I never forgave her for taking you away. You were happier before her, Roy. You called me. You came by. Now you’re always at that hospital, with her. She’s made you neglect your family.”
“My marriage was my choice, Mom.”
“I don’t accept that.”
The room seemed to shrink around us.
Margaret’s chin trembled. For the first time, I realized her emotion wasn’t entirely an act. Beneath the grief was genuine rage.
She directed all of it toward Roy.
She reminded him of her sacrifices, sleepless nights, and the years she’d spent raising him alone.
Then she insisted I’d eventually abandon him.
